Because you’re not covered by Australia's public health care system it’s a requirement of your Australian Student Visa to have OSHC for the entire length of your study stay. This is important so that you’re covered for medical and hospital needs in Australia which can be very expensive.
Please note that OSHC cover is only applicable for medical and hospital treatment whilst you are in Australia. If you decide to travel outside of Australia for the holidays then you may wish to consider taking out travel insurance.
